Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport adds flight to America’s best beach. See ticket prices
If you’re fed up with the snow and bitter cold that have gripped Central Kentucky this winter, seasonal flights to Destin, Fla., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., are returning to Blue Grass Airport this spring.
There’s also a new destination that’s home to the No. 1 beach in America, which will be available just as Fayette County Public Schools is going on spring break in early April. What’s more, airfare for a nonstop, one-way flight there could cost you as little as $45.
Here’s what to know about new and returning flights available at Blue Grass Airport in Fayette County starting this spring.
Flights will begin to Florida beach town ranked No. 1 in the US
Beginning Thursday, April 3, flights to Sarasota, Fla., will be available from Blue Grass Airport.
Along with being a hub for arts and culture, where visitors can find the Ringling Museum, Sarasota is also home to Siesta Key Beach, which Tripadvisor has named the No. 1 beach in the U.S.
Siesta Beach, known for its powder-white sand and clear water, also ranks among the world’s top beaches, falling just behind spots in Greece, Thailand and Aruba.
The flights will be via budget-carrier Allegiant Air. According to a Blue Grass Airport spokesperson, the carrier is advertising nonstop, one-way fares as low as $45 for flights purchased by Wednesday, April 9 and valid during the travel season, which runs until Sunday, Aug. 31.
Flight reservations can be made through allegiantair.com or by calling the airline at 702-505-8888. For baggage information, call 866-719-3910.
Other destinations returning to Blue Grass Airport this spring
In May, service is being restored to LaGuardia Airport in New York City for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic, when nonstop, daily flights between Lexington and New York City were suspended.
Those flights, available year-round, will begin again Wednesday, May 7 via Delta. When the airport announced the return of flights to LaGuardia late last year, Blue Grass Airport President and CEO Eric Frankl said it was in response to public demand.
“Hardly a week has gone by when we haven’t heard from someone in our community asking about the return of non-stop service from Lexington to New York, so we are thrilled Delta Air Lines is announcing this flight will return to Blue Grass Airport in May 2025,” Frankl said, according to a November news release.
Returning seasonal service to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Destin, Fla., also begins again in May.
More information about the airport’s 18 nonstop destinations can be found on its website.
