Kentucky’s medical marijuana program marked a milestone Thursday as Gov. Andy Beshear announced the soft opening of the state’s first dispensary, which will be supplied by a Central Kentucky cultivator.

During his weekly news conference, the governor said The Post Dispensary, located in Ohio County, will open its doors to customers for the first time Saturday, Dec. 13.

Supplies will be limited and are expected to run out the same day, but Beshear celebrated the news as a major milestone for the program two years after medical marijuana was legalized in the state.

“This news makes Saturday the first day that safe, regulated medical cannabis is available to patients, and it makes The Post our first fully-approved and licensed medical dispensary in the state,” Beshear said, touting it as a win for patients. “Our priority is ensuring Kentuckians suffering with serious medical conditions, like cancer, PTSD, MS and others can now have access to safe, medical cannabis.

The rollout of Kentucky’s medical marijuana program has faced challenges as it works to stand up a network of in-state cultivators, product processors and dispensaries.

Kentucky opened cardholder applications to eligible patients through an online portal in January.

At least 23,757 individuals have obtained electronic certifications to access medical marijuana, Beshear said earlier this month. Top conditions include cancer, chronic nausea and chronic pain.

Kentucky’s first cannabis dispensary to have soft opening

The Post Dispensary, located in Beaver Dam, has a tie to the Lexington area in that its supplier is the tier 1 cultivator Goeing Blue LLC, which is doing business as Farmtucky. It’s licensed as a cultivator in Jessamine County.

As a tier I cultivator, the smallest type of cultivation operation Kentucky licenses, Goeing Blue LLC is allowed up to 2,500 square feet of growing space. The company was organized by Matthew Goeing, a Lexington attorney.

In October of 2024, Goeing Blue LLC was awarded the state’s first cultivator license. The initial license was for Fayette County, but the state’s Office of Medical Cannabis approved a request to change its location to Jessamine County in December 2024.

A phone call placed to Goeing’s voicemail at his Lexington law office Thursday afternoon was not immediately returned.

In a previous call with the Herald-Leader Dec. 4, Goeing said the cultivator had been operating since August. It recently completed its first harvest and sent the product to a compliance lab for testing.

“We should be able to ship products to the dispensaries within the next week or so,” Goeing told the Herald-Leader Dec. 4.

Speaking about the dispensary’s slated opening Saturday, Beshear stressed supply will be low. The Post Dispensary plans to open at 10 a.m. and do business through 6 p.m. or while supplies last.

“While product is available, it is limited while the cultivator and the dispensary get up to full and running capacity,” Beshear said.

Earlier this month, inspectors with the Office of Medical Cannabis conducted site visits, a requirement all medical marijuana businesses in Kentucky must complete before they can begin operations.

The state granted business licenses through a series of lotteries in late 2024, including for 48 dispensary licenses. A list of licensees is available at kymedcan.ky.gov.
