▪  Tanya Torp, Blue Grass Community Foundation and the late Betsy Nowland-Curry have received the 2016 Lauren K. Weinberg Humanitarian Awards from the Kentucky Conference for Community and Justice and The Plantory.

Since 1951, the Humanitarian Awards have been given to individuals and organizations in the Bluegrass whose dedication and service to the community promotes respect, understanding and tolerance among all people. The 2016 recipients were honored at an awards ceremony Feb. 13 at The Plantory’s nonprofit coworking center, 501 West Sixth Street, Suite 250, above West Sixth Brewing Co.

Torp is a program director of Step by Step Lexington. She works to inspire and encourage young mothers through case management, counseling and support. She also serves as executive director of Be Bold, a nonprofit initiative that inspires girls to achieve their goals.

Blue Grass Community Foundation helps individuals, families, businesses, communities and nonprofit organizations establish charitable funds, guide resources to support causes, and meet community needs to make a difference.

Nowland-Curry, who died in January, demonstrated a lifelong commitment to humanitarian work. She founded the Spouse Abuse Center, served as director of the YWCA, worked as executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Women, provided support to those most in need as a social worker, and had numerous professional humanitarian accomplishments.
