Mellow Mushroom opened its second restaurant Monday at The Plaza at Lexington Green, in the former movie theater that has been revamped into stores and offices.
The popular national pizza and beer chain also has a restaurant at 503 South Upper Street, near the University of Kentucky campus.
“We thought there was an opportunity to get out into the more suburban area of Lexington,” said Damon Coates, who owns both restaurants. “With the campus one, it’s kind of a small location, and we wanted to provide convenience for people out here.”
The new restaurant has a different look and feel, with a 1960-70s English rock and roll theme, rather than the funky treehouse look of South Upper. And the restaurant at 220 Lexington Green Circle is bigger, with 160 seats inside, plus covered patio seating for 45 to 50 and a mezzanine inside that can be reserved for private parties and seats about 50.
“Everyone’s so used to our downtown store, but a lot of the Mellow’s are fancier and bigger these days,” Coates said. “Every Mellow Mushroom is different.”
But the menu is the same, with pizzas, salads, calzones and subs, and 40 beers on tap. The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to midnight Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Other tenants at the Plaza at Lexington Green are Peacocks & Pearls (coming soon), Sola Salon Studios and Vetdata offices in the back.
