All public masses in the Catholic Diocese of Lexington will be suspended starting Tuesday until further notice, Bishop John Stowe announced Monday.

Funerals will still be permitted, as long as social distancing is practiced, according to the diocese. The church has advised that other events be rescheduled “as much as possible.”

“Let us pray for our people and our world and be creative in our outreach through social media and other means to continue to make this a meaningful Lent, despite the unusual circumstances,” Stowe said in a statement.

Stowe said that medical recommendations and a desire to help led to the decision.

The move affects the entire diocese, which includes 50 counties, 58 parishes and 15 catholic schools.
