Coronavirus

Five new COVID-19 cases in Lexington, bringing total to 42. One is a 3-year-old boy.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department announced five new COVID-19 cases in Lexington Thursday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Kentucky’s second largest city to 42.

The number of new cases is expected to continue rising in the coming days, as a result of community spread throughout Kentucky and more labs running tests. There are at least 224 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kentucky as of mid-day Thursday, spread across 39 of Kentucky’s 120 counties.

Kevin Hall, the spokesman for the health department, said one patient has recovered and has been released from isolation.

None of the cases reported by the health department Thursday were related to a party that was attended by at least three people who later tested positive for COVID-19. The party in Fayette County was a different party than a “coronavirus party” Beshear mentioned in his Tuesday press conference.

There has been one coronavirus-related death in Lexington — an 82-year-old woman who had underlying health problems — and five deaths across the state, including one in Jefferson County Wednesday. All of the deaths related to the coronavirus have been people older than sixty.

Among the patients who tested positive in Fayette County this week is a 3-year-old boy, according to the administration of Gov. Andy Beshear.

The health department does not provide demographic information for COVID-19 cases, but Beshear’s administration has confirmed information for 31 of the patients. The median age of people who have tested positive in Fayette County is 40.
