Lexington sends most city employees home; Fayette County Clerk’s office closes
Many local government offices are now closing or operating on skeleton staffs to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said Friday only essential city employees will be required to come to work starting Saturday. Employees still will be paid and must be available to come to work as needed, according to the written release.
Citizens should not see a disruption in public safety or trash pickup, she said.
“Public safety, waste management and water quality are among our top priorities. Scaling back the number of employees coming in also allows us to shift the city’s supplies of personal protection equipment to these divisions,” Gorton said.
Yard waste pickup has been temporarily suspended, Gorton said. Fayette County residents can take yard waste at no charge to Haley Pike Waste Management Facility at 4216 Hedger Lane from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
In addition, the Fayette County Clerk’s office will temporarily close and cease operations immediately.
“I completely support and agree with Mayor Gorton’s decision to limit local government to essential services.,” said Fayette County Clerk Don Blevins Jr. “We are entering a time where it is crucial to limit the transmission of COVID-19, and this is an important component of our strategy.”
Blevins said people can still renew vehicle registrations online at drive.ky.gov. Renewals can be mailed to the Fayette County Clerk’s office at 162 East Main Street, Lexington, KY 40507. Mailed and online renewals will not be processed until the clerk’s office reopens.
Vehicle transfers will be suspended until further notice. Individuals selling a Kentucky-titled vehicle to another person will also have to wait until the clerk’s office reopens.
Voters may continue to register to vote or update addresses by submitting a new registration form online at www.govoteky.com until 4 p.m. May 26. Registrations by mail can be sent to the clerk’s office at the above address and must be postmarked by May 26.
All marriage licenses are also currently suspended. The office is trying to develop another option. To keep up to date on possible changes please check www.fayettecountyclerk.com.
