19 more people test positive for COVID-19 in Lexington, bringing total to 93

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department said Monday that 19 more Fayette County residents have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the county total to 93 cases.

Gov. Andy Beshear has warned Kentuckians to expect a significant spike in confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus during the next two weeks. Across the state, there have been more than 300 new cases in the past week and the number of cases in Lexington has tripled since last Tuesday.

The Beshear administration has said two people have died from the respiratory disease in Fayette County, but the health department said only one of those two is a resident of the city — a 75-year-old woman. It is unclear where the second victim lived.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton has begun to crack down on people congregating in public places as the weather has warmed. Last week, she shut down Raven Run, McConnell Springs and public sports facilities. On Monday she shut down playgrounds, park restrooms and some parking lots.

Beshear has urged people to continue practicing social distancing, saying it’s necessary to help save lives as the number of cases continues to rise.

“We will hit a critical point in our capacity,” Beshear said in his daily press conference Sunday. “It’s our job to make sure we have as few of those days as possible.”
