13 new cases of coronavirus in Lexington and no new deaths as numbers slowly rise
The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department announced 13 new cases of the novel coronavirus Wednesday, bringing the city’s total to 183 cases. No new deaths were announced in Fayette County.
About 89 people in Lexington have already recovered and seven have died from a disease that has spread rapidly through Kentucky and through the country.
According to demographic information released by the health department Wednesday, black people with COVID-19 in Lexington have been hospitalized at a higher rate than any other race, at 50 percent. Black people account for 15 percent of the population in Lexington, but 28 percent of the COVID-19 cases, according to the health department.
People between the ages of 55 and 74 have accounted for 59 percent of Lexington’s hospitalizations and make up 34 percent of the total cases in the city.
Those numbers are similar to statewide figures. People who are black make up 8.3 percent of the population in Kentucky but they account for 12 percent of the coronavirus cases in the state, according to Governor Andy Beshear.
All of the people who have died from complications of the disease in Lexington have been older than 56, while three of the seven people who have died are in their 80s.
The number of cases in Lexington has grown more slowly than other areas of the state in recent days. In Louisville, the number of cases has quickly ballooned beyond 400 with at least 27 deaths.
