Fayette reports one new COVID-19 case; no deaths in 11 days

The number of new Fayette County patients who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus edged up by only one on Thursday.

The total number of cases is now 213, according to data released by the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department.

This is the fourth straight day of single-digit increases in new infections in Kentucky’s second-largest county. On Monday, one new case was reported. Tuesday, the number climbed by four. Wednesday saw just three new cases.

Fayette County has had seven people who have died from the virus. But it’s been 11 days since the last death was reported on April 6.

Meanwhile, Jefferson County, Kentucky’s most populous county, is reporting double-digit increases in the number of new coronavirus patients. On Wednesday, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said there were 64 new coronavirus cases in Jefferson County, bringing the total to nearly 690 cases. Fifty-five people in Jefferson County have died from complications from the virus.

About 19 percent of Fayette County COVID-19 patients were hospitalized, data released by the health department shows.

More Fayette County patients have recovered than are currently ill, the data shows. About 68 percent, or 144 patients, are no longer in isolation.

The virus has also disproportionately affected black Fayette County residents. Approximately 30 percent of the 213 patients are black. Fayette County is only 15 percent black, census data shows.
