Kentucky coronavirus data: Seven charts tracking Kentucky’s COVID-19 cases and testing
Governor Beshear is using a combination of factors to determine when Kentucky can reopen and how to phase back into life under a new normal.
Part of that decision making is determined by data on COVID-19 cases in the state and the state’s testing capacity. Here are some of the numbers Beshear has been using to make those decisions.
Daily COVID-19 information
Each day, Beshear reads off the number of new COVID-19 cases, the number of people who have died from COVID-19 and the number of people who have ever been hospitalized. These numbers tend to vary based on testing and when the information reaches his office, making it difficult to discern trends. His office did not start releasing consistent hospitalization data until April 12.
Three day averages
To account for the variability in reporting, Beshear has said that he looks at the three day average of new cases.
Percentage of confirmed cases by people tested
Beshear has also said he looks at the percentage of the total confirmed cases in the state compared to the total number of people who have been tested in order to help determine if there has been a decrease. Data since April 12.
Total number of confirmed cases
The total number of COVID-19 cases has increased significantly since the first case was announced in early March.
Total number of Kentuckians tested
Beshear has said he would like to see 20,000 people tested a week before social activities start to resume. Data since April 12.
