Musical light show downtown will honor Fayette Class of 2020. What you need to know.
On Wednesday, the last official day of Fayette County Public Schools for 2019-20, the district is collaborating with City Center and iHeartRadio 104.5 The Cat to light up downtown Lexington with a musical light show tribute to the Class of 2020.
Here’s what you need to know, according to a Tuesday news release from the school district.
Beginning at 9:30 p.m. on May 27 and repeating every 30 minutes at 10 p.m., 10:30 p.m., 11 p.m., 11:30 p.m. and 12 a.m., a specially programmed light and music show will celebrate the graduates.
The light show will feature the colors of Fayette County Public Schools’ six large high schools and will play to the tune of “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” by Justin Timberlake, which will air on 104.5 The Cat radio.
“Being able to light up City Center with a special musical arrangement hopefully makes for a night these seniors will never forget,” said Ralph Coldiron, City Center spokesman, who gave credit to Henry Clay High School alum Ross Boggess and other community supporters for bringing the event together.
The light show will be displayed on the Main Street side of City Center on the downtown Lexington office tower on the corner of South Limestone and East Main Street. The display will be filmed via drone and seniors are encouraged to visit 1045thecat.com or the radio station’s Facebook page to view the music-to-light show salute to seniors from May 28 through May 30.
The best view will be online. However, people who go downtown to see it live should consider Phoenix Park, Courthouse Plaza or venues along Main and Limestone.
“Social distancing requirements remain in place and everyone is encouraged to follow state guidelines for gatherings,” the news release said.
“We are grateful to our amazing community partners at iHeartRadio and City Center for helping close this year in a special way for our seniors,” Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Manny Caulk said. “The Class of 2020 has shown heart and resiliency while weathering the disappointments of missing out on the special traditions enjoyed by generations of Lexingtonians. It is only fitting that we celebrate their graduation with creative gestures like this one.”
