Kentucky COVID-19 cases increase by 247. Thirteen more deaths reported Saturday.

The number of COVID-19 cases reported in Kentucky grew by 247 Saturday, bringing the total to 9,704, an increase thought to be linked to continued testing in long-term care facilities.

Thirteen more deaths were reported.

Saturday marked the second day with a marked increase in cases. On Friday, 283 new cases were reported.

According to a news release from the governor’s office, 37 percent of the new cases reported Friday were in long-term care facilities, and another 9 percent were in other congregate living facilities, primarily the Federal Medical Center in Lexington.

“We are reviewing today’s data to see if the pattern is continuing, which is largely a result of our expansive testing initiative in long-term care facilities,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a news release Saturday.

The state reported 65,800 tests conducted this week, which is thought to be the most Kentucky has had in any week so far during the pandemic.

Kentucky has had 431 deaths as a result of the virus, including the 13 people reported Saturday.

Beshear reminded people to light up their homes, businesses and houses of worship in green.

“In light of the events of the last couple days, compassion is something we need to have on full display,” he said.
