UK’s Kroger Field will be only in-person voting site in Lexington for the June primary
Fayette County’s only in-person voting location for the June 23 primary will be Kroger Field, local officials announced Wednesday.
Fayette County Clerk Don Blevins Jr. said the University of Kentucky has allowed the county to use UK’s football stadium.
Blevins urged people to request an absentee ballot and not vote in person. Voting in person could spread the coronavirus to others, including poll workers, he said.
The state has had to dramatically change how people vote for the June primary in order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
“Do the right thing and vote from the comfort of your kitchen table,” Blevins said.
The deadline to request an absentee ballot is June 15. Voters are encouraged to request a ballot at www.govotekentucky.com.
That’s the quickest and easiest way to get an absentee ballot, Blevins said. Voters also can request a ballot by phone at 859-253-3344.
Blevins cautioned people to read directions on those ballots carefully before voting. People can mail ballots back for free, he said.
People can also drop off their ballots at Kroger Field from June 15 – 22 at the President’s Pavilion outside of Gate 9 at Kroger Field. Parking is available in the Blue Lot.
Voters can drop off ballots on June 23 at the Commonwealth Tower Lobby at Kroger Stadium.
Blevins said those who are handicapped or may need additional assistance can vote June 8 to 23 by appointment only at the Lexington Senior Center at 195 Life Lane. People need to call the Fayette County Clerk’s office at 859-253-3344 to set up an appointment.
More information on all voting options can be found at www.lexingtonky.gov/vote.
To date, Blevins said he has received 46,000 ballot requests, one of the highest totals in the state. Blevins said county clerks are struggling to keep up with demand for mail-in ballots, particularly in smaller counties.
Blevins said State Board of Elections officials have said turnout could be as high as 50 percent for the primary. That high voter turnout is likely due in part to the popularity of mail-in voting, he said.
This year, there are primaries for president, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Kentucky Senate, Kentucky House of Representatives as well as local races.
