Coronavirus

Lexington’s new COVID cases top 60 Saturday. Two-day count near 150.

Sixty-five new coronavirus cases were reported in Lexington Saturday, bringing the two-day total to 148 after a record was set Friday, according to the city health department.

Twenty-five of the newly confirmed cases were in the 18-34 age group, according to the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. There were no new deaths. The total number of confirmed cases now sits at 1,987.

On Friday, Lexington topped its single-day high in new COVID-19 cases for the third time since the start of the month, as the health department reported 83 new cases.

There was also one new death Friday, which was the 33rd in Lexington. The victim was a resident at Pine Meadows nursing home, which has had six coronavirus-related deaths. More than two dozen employees and six dozen residents have had confirmed cases at the long-term care facility.

Kevin Hall, a health department spokesman, said Friday about 30 percent of the new cases came from long-term care facilities.

“We are also seeing new cases who report going to gyms and restaurants while infectious,” Hall said in a statement. “It’s important to remember to stay home if you are sick to avoid spreading COVID-19 to others.”

Hall said there weren’t clusters of cases at any particular gym or restaurant. He said if any one business became a major public health concern, the department would contact it to provide guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention while offering recommendations for sanitizing.

New cases have also continued to come from travel to virus “hot spots” like Florida and South Carolina, Hall said.
