‘Stay home if you are sick.’ New COVID-19 cases spreading ‘rapidly’ in Lexington.

Lexington reported 89 new COVID-19 cases from Saturday and Sunday, pushing the total number of confirmed cases past 2,000.

Fifty-six of those cases were confirmed Saturday, making it the fourth-highest daily increase the city has seen thus far. The total case count is now 2,076. Since the start of July, cases increased by 523, with 363 of those coming in the last week, according to the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department.

Accounting for Friday’s confirmed cases, there were a total of 154 new cases for the weekend. Case investigations have shown that people are going to public businesses while infectious, the health department said.

“It’s important to stay home if you are sick,” the health department said in a statement that also emphasized the spread of cases is rapid.

The city reported no new deaths from Saturday and Sunday.

After reaching 1,000 cases on June 10, Lexington’s cases jumped by another 1,000 in less than one-third of the time (the first coronavirus case in a Lexington resident was announced March 8). All five of the top single-day case increases for the city have come in July.

From July 6-12, new cases increased 63.5 percent compared to the previous week. New cases in residents 34 and under increased 89.2 percent compared to the previous week. New cases in residents 55 and over increased slightly.

New deaths decreased from four to two over the last two weeks, and new hospitalizations increased slightly.
