Coronavirus cases in Kentucky continue to rise, as state reports 583 new cases Saturday

Kentucky reported 583 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the state’s second-highest number of new cases in one day since the pandemic began.

Nine more deaths were reported, bringing the total lives lost in Kentucky to 667, Gov. Andy Beshear said in a news release.

The new cases reported Saturday brought the state’s total to at least 22,184.

“That means this is a dangerous time and it can’t be explained away by our increase in tests,” Beshear said in the news release.

He emphasized the need for people to wear masks, saying “this is what it’s going to take if we want to save our economy and save lives and get our kids back in school, it’s really that simple.”

At least 529,481 coronavirus tests had been conducted in Kentucky as of Saturday. The rate of positive cases stands at 4.66 percent, which is based on a seven-day rolling average.

As of Saturday, 514 people were hospitalized with the virus, including 109 in ICU, according to state data.

Five of the deaths reported Saturday were from Logan County. They included three women ages 78, 80 and 81, and two men, ages 83 and 96. Other deaths included a 93-year-old woman from Jefferson County, an 88-year-old woman from Shelby County, a 64-year-old man from Simpson County and a 76-year-old woman from Warren County.
