These 123 Kentucky child care centers have reported cases of COVID-19
After Kentucky allowed regulated child care providers to reopen in June following a three-month shutdown, reports of COVID-19 infections among employees and children began to trickle in, according to state data.
Two months later, new reports arrive on a daily basis.
On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear said 123 child care facilities have disclosed infections for 96 staff members and 82 children. There are 1,743 licensed or certified child care providers in the state at present, although nearly 20 percent of those are classified as “temporarily closed” as the industry struggles to stay alive.
“It is a myth that kids do not get this virus,” Beshear said. “It is a myth that kids cannot spread this virus. And so what we are seeing is a significant increase in the infection rate of our young people.”
The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services provided the Herald-Leader with a list of about 120 facilities that have reported a COVID-19 infection so far, usually through their local health departments. In a couple of cases, the child care provider did not have an employee or child who was infected, but somebody at the center had direct contact with a person known to be infected with the novel coronavirus, raising concerns.
Under the state’s reopening rules for child care providers, classes must be limited to no more than 10 children, and teachers are assigned to stick with the same classes throughout the day. Because of that, when an infection is reported, it typically can be contained by ordering one class to be quarantined at home for 14 days rather than closing an entire facility.
Recent public health guidelines suggest that parents have children tested after an exposure to someone who is positive for COVID-19, although the guidelines note that a negative test result won’t shorten the recommended 14-day home quarantine. So unless they show symptoms, the total number of COVID-positive children at affected facilities likely will never be known.
