Lexington surpasses 5,000 total COVID-19 cases with 156 new cases over the weekend
Lexington reported 156 new COVID-19 cases Monday morning, which pushed the city past the 5,000 mark for total cases.
The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department has reported 5,067 total cases since the city’s first case was confirmed in early March. There have also been 53 deaths, 380 hospitalizations and 4,080 recoveries, according to health department data.
Lexington’s cases include 449 University of Kentucky students, 216 nursing home residents and 363 jail or prison inmates, according to health department data. Inmates include those at the Lexington-Fayette County Detention Center and those at the Federal Medical Center on Leestown Road.
More than 1,000 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Black Lexington residents. The Black community accounts for about 20 percent of the city’s COVID-19 cases despite making up only 14.4 percent of the city’s population.
