Lexington reports new COVID-19 cases. Racial disparities prevalent in virus data

Lexington reported 58 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday morning. The city’s total case count is now 5,187.

Lexington’s 25-34 population has continued to see larger case increases than other age groups. That age group now has nearly 1,000 cases. But deaths have primarily been older Lexington residents. Over half of all victims in fatal cases have been 75 or older, according to data from the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department.

The respiratory illness continues to affect some populations disproportionately. Lexington’s Hispanic population accounts for 27 percent of total COVID-19 cases and 13 percent of deaths despite making up only about 7 percent of the city’s population. Lexington’s Black community makes up just 14.4 percent of the city’s population, but has about 20 percent of all cases and 26 percent of all deaths.

Since the pandemic first reached Lexington in March, the city has reported 395 COVID-19 hospitalizations, 53 deaths and 4,254 recoveries, according to health department data.
