Kentucky has more than 1,000 new cases of coronavirus, seven more deaths Saturday

Kentucky reported 1,002 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday, and seven more deaths, Gov. Andy Beshear said.

Kentucky has had a total of 61,106 cases since the pandemic began. There have been 1,108 deaths as a result of the virus in Kentucky.

“Remember, high number of cases lead to a higher number of deaths several weeks down the line,” Beshear said in a news release. “Now that our kids are going to be going back to school in many places in some form or fashion, now that we have more sports, let’s make sure that we cut our contacts, wear our masks and socially distance. Let’s do better – everyone around us is depending on it.”

Saturday’s new cases included 145 children ages 18 and under.

Kentucky’s positivity rate was at 3.82 percent Saturday. An influx of new tests as a result of a new lab being added to Kentucky’s lab surveillance survey has brought the positivity rate down significantly this week, officials said Friday.

As of Saturday, 496 people were hospitalized with coronavirus, according to state data, and 114 were in intensive care.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department reported 114 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday, bringing Fayette County’s total to 7,694.

No new deaths were reported in Lexington Saturday. The city has lost 71 people to coronavirus so far, according to the health department.

The deaths reported in Kentucky Saturday included six women, from Boyd, Jefferson, Lincoln, Martin, Mercer and Warren counties, and one man from Jefferson County. Those who died ranged in age from 66 to 91 years old.
