Ky. reports 973 coronavirus cases Saturday, putting state on track for a record week, Beshear says

Kentucky reported 973 new cases of coronavirus and five more deaths as a result of the virus on Saturday, Gov. Andy Beshear said in a news release.

“Folks, right now we are on pace to have the single highest week in terms of positive cases that we’ve ever had,” Beshear said in the release. “We simply have to do better. Please wear a mask. Sadly, sometimes I’m seeing less of these out there than more. This will save lives.”

Of the new COVID-19 cases reported Saturday, 132 were among those ages 18 and under. The new cases bring Kentucky’s total to 66,036 since the pandemic began.

So far, 1,154 Kentuckians have died. The deaths reported Saturday include a Scott County man, 67; an 88-year-old man and 101-year-old woman from Boyd County; an 86-year-old woman from Christian County and an 80-year-old woman from Union County.

Over the past seven days, 4.42 percent of coronavirus tests administered in Kentucky have been positive, according to the release.

As of Saturday, 538 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, and 129 were in intensive care, according to state data.

There were 621 active coronavirus cases among nursing home and assisted living residents Saturday, 68 of which were newly reported. There were 457 active cases among staff at those facilities, and 29 of them were newly reported Saturday.

Of the 68 new cases among residents Saturday, 41 were at Hillcrest Health and Rehabilitation in Laurel County, where there were 11 new cases among staff. In total, the facility had 61 active cases of COVID-19 among residents and 38 among staff as of Saturday.

There were 114 new cases reported among students in Kindergarten through twelfth grade on Saturday, and 18 new cases reported among school staff. State data says there are 685 active cases of coronavirus among students, and 306 active cases among staff.

Six new cases were reported among students at Kentucky colleges and universities Saturday, and 1 new case was reported among staff. The state says there are 1,403 active student cases and 46 active staff cases.
