Storm bringing wind gusts of 50 mph or more moves across Kentucky

A line of storms with 40- to 50-mph winds blew across Kentucky Saturday.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Lexington, Paris and Cynthiana until 1:30 p.m.

A wind gust of 55 mph was recorded at Blue Grass Airport ahead of the storm, said John Gordon, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Louisville.

“This is a big wind event,” he said.

Storms across the southern part of the country were blamed for the deaths of at least 10 people Saturday.

Lexington police responded to numerous trees and power lines down throughout the city ahead of the storm Saturday.

Kentucky Utilities reported several power outages in the area.

In Louisville, two people were rescued after a tree fell on their home, WAVE reported. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect until 5 p.m. Saturday for 26 Central Kentucky counties, including Fayette and surrounding counties. A wind advisory was in effect until midnight.

Gordon said the rain will be followed by a big cool down.

While Lexington’s temperature was 71 degrees just before noon, Gordon said Saturday night’s low would likely be in the mid- to upper 30s.

Sunday should be mostly cloudy, with a high of 48.
