The Lexington Humane Society is accepting donations to help care for a dog that was brutally assaulted.

On Thursday the humane society put out its first Facebook post about the dog, named Rudy. The group said a bystander found Rudy abandoned, curled up in the street while children threw rocks at him.

The incident happened somewhere in the downtown area, according to the humane society. The bystander intervened the assault and brought him to Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control.

The humane society said the dog suffered many injuries, including a degloved jaw, uprooted teeth and puncture wounds to his legs.

A degloved jaw occurs when the skin, muscle and fat covering the jawbone are torn or ripped away, exposing the underlying bone.

It’s unknown if Rudy suffered all his injuries from the assault, according to the humane society. Animal Care & Control did not have enough information about the incident to contact police.

We may never know exactly what caused his suffering, but we do know two things: He did NOT deserve this. And we will do everything in our power to ensure he never suffers again,” the humane society said in the Facebook post.

On Saturday, the humane society put out a second Facebook posting updating Rudy’s status. He underwent expensive surgery to fix his jaw, which is now held together with stitches and a wire, the humane society said.

“For now, he can only eat soft food, but despite everything he’s endured, Rudy’s spirit remains unbroken. He wags his tail every time he sees us—his way of saying thank you,” the humane society said in the Facebook post.

Rudy’s recovery is ongoing and the humane society is accepting donations for Rudy’s care. The two Facebook posts about Rudy from the humane society have raised more than $10,000 as of Monday morning.

“Rudy has been the underdog in his past, but that ends now. With your support, we will give him the medical care, love, and second chance he so desperately needs,” the humane society said in the Facebook post.

“We’ll help him heal—not just physically, but emotionally—so he can finally experience the kindness and compassion he was so cruelly denied.”
