Director of Lexington construction company dies in single-vehicle car crash
The director of a construction company in Lexington died in a car crash Sunday, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.
The victim was identified as Jerry Woodall, 82. The coroner’s office said Woodall was declared dead at 11:46 p.m. from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in a crash on Keeneland Boulevard and Versailles Road.
The crash happened around 11:06 p.m., according to the Lexington Police Department. Woodall was driving a car when he went off the road and hit a tree.
Jon Woodall, Jerry Woodall’s son, told the Herald-Leader his father suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel and was unconscious during the crash. The coroner’s office labeled Jerry Woodall’s death as an accident.
Police said the Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the wreck.
Jon Woodall said his father had just returned from a trip to North Carolina to watch his grandson’s final home baseball game with Davidson College. Jerry Woodall had five grandchildren and attended every one of their sporting events he could make.
Woodall was the director of Woodall Construction Co., Inc. in Lexington, according to his son. The company’s website says he purchased the company, formerly known as Riggs Construction Co., from the retiring James C. Riggs.
The company was incorporated in 1988 and serves central Kentucky, but has also worked on projects outside of the area. The company has been involved in several high-profile local projects, including the new campus center at Transylvania University, Hub Lexington, Regency Center Outlet and Springs at Hamburg, according to the company’s website.
The company’s website said it focuses on site preparation projects, such as clearing, grading, installation of sewer systems, roadways and concrete work.
“He was a great supporter of mine and the University of Kentucky,” former Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari said of Woodall in a post on X. “His son Scott was part of our daily coffee crew along with Jerry who would come from time to time after his morning workout. Thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Woodall family.”
