One dead, one injured in crash on Athens Boonesboro Road in Lexington

One person died and another person was seriously injured in a car crash in Lexington early Thursday morning, according to the Lexington Police Department.

The crash happened around 12:55 a.m. at Athens Boonesboro Road and Doe Run Trail. Lexington police Lt. Steven Wiggins said two cars collided, and each car had one occupant.

One of the drivers was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Wiggins. The Fayette County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as Benjamin Gabbard, 48.

The other driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, Wiggins said.

It’s unknown what caused the crash but the collision reconstruction unit investigated the scene. The road has since been reopened.
