Are Lexington grocery stores closing early due to winter storm? See hours

State and local officials are urging Kentuckians to prepare for significant impacts from Winter Storm Fern, which could bring ice and 7 to 13 inches of snow to the Lexington area.

If you still need to run to the store ahead of the storm’s arrival Saturday, here’s what to know about Lexington store hours at Kroger, Walmart, Meijer and Target, including whether the stores plan to close early.

Target — 131 West Reynolds Road

A store representative reached by phone Friday said the West Reynolds Road Target has no current plans to close early for the storm. Should that change, a notice will be posted outside.

Responding to questions about store hours and product shortages due to Winter Storm Fern, a Target spokesperson sent the following statement via email Friday:

“Target stores are stocked and well equipped to serve our guests in all weather conditions, and we work quickly to make sure that high-demand products are readily available. We’re closely monitoring this winter storm,” the statement reads in part.

The spokesperson said guests can find the current status of any store by visiting its store locator.

Kroger — 704 Euclid Avenue

A representative at Kroger’s Euclid Avenue store reached by phone Friday said there are no current plans to close early this weekend.

Should that change, a notice will be posted on the door outside the store.

The Herald-Leader reached out to Kroger’s media representatives but did not receive an immediate response Friday.

Meijer — 351 Meijer Way

A store representative said Friday that the Meijer at 351 Meijer Way — off Reynolds Road — has no plans to close early. There were no current shortages or purchase limits in place for shoppers, a store employee said.

The Herald-Leader reached out to Meijer media representatives. Alyssa Upton, a spokesperson for Meijer’s Louisville and Lexington markets, issued the following statement via email:

“Meijer stores will be open normal hours, from 6 a.m. to midnight. We have been preparing for this storm, and are getting extra deliveries today and tomorrow morning. Our teams are working hard ensure that we are stocked and ready for our customers, so they can get in and out of our stores quickly and stay safe at home during the storm,” Upton wrote.

Walmart — 4051 Nicholasville Road

A Walmart store representative reached by phone was unaware of any plans to close early due to Winter Storm Fern. A store manager was not available.

A spokesperson for Walmart responded to the Herald-Leader’s questions with an emailed statement Friday.

“Ahead of the severe winter weather, we’ve been preparing our stores and clubs to help ensure our communities have access to essential items like blankets, batteries and other cold-weather necessities. We’re also supporting our associates with preparedness guidance, working closely with local law enforcement and partnering with community and nonprofit organizations to support those who may be most impacted. The safety of our associates and customers remains our top priority, and we will continue to closely assess conditions and operate our facilities as long as it is safe to do so,” the statement said.

“During severe weather, we focus on making sure customers and communities have what they need, using Walmart’s supply chain to respond quickly and effectively. We are taking steps to help ensure essential items—such as blankets, batteries, and other cold-weather necessities—are available in communities expected to be impacted. We are also coordinating with community and nonprofit partners to support local response efforts where possible,” the statement continued.

Walmart is normally open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Check Walmart’s website for updates on store closures.
