Lexington drivers: Expect traffic changes inside New Circle as KY helps clear snow, ice
Lexington drivers should expect slower traffic on local streets as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet helps city crews clear ice and snow inside New Circle Road, the agency said Thursday.
The announcement came not long after Gov. Andy Beshear called the city’s response to Winter Storm Fern “unacceptable,” and said state trucks would soon be hitting the Fayette County roads to assist local crews. Winter Storm Fern dumped 5.5 inches of snow, plus over an inch of ice, on Central Kentucky. Lexington has struggled to dig out.
”Multiple trucks and road graders are currently working to clear ice-covered travel lanes, especially turn lanes and shoulders, which will require temporary lane closures on various state highways and city streets,” the agency said in a news statement.
“Motorists should use caution in work areas, heed all warning signs and flaggers, and give trucks and heavy equipment plenty of room to operate safely.”
Beshear referenced Lexington’s struggles to clear snow and ice from a 2025 winter storm as well.
“This is the second (winter storm) in a row that we should have seen better results, and I think the mayor has said that and has taken responsibility,” Beshear said.
The governor said the state had offered to help the city clear roads earlier in the storm, but was told the help “wasn’t needed.” The city has since changed its mind, Beshear said.
“We appreciate the support being offered by the state,” said Susan Straub, a spokesperson for the city.
