A new traffic light will be activated next Tuesday, May 5, at an intersection on Winchester Road in Lexington, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The traffic light will be at Winchester Road and Commerce Avenue/realigned Hume Road, just west of Interstate 75. The transportation cabinet previously said the traffic light will be fully activated Thursday morning, but later changed its activation to 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

The transportation cabinet said additional work needed to be done on signal system, which is what caused the delay. The traffic light is currently in flash mode.

Both directions of Winchester Road will have protected left turns, according to the transportation cabinet. A pedestrian crossing has also been added on the south side of Winchester Road.

The light will control increasing traffic in the rapidly expanding area called Hamburg East. A new Baptist Health Hospital opened on Polo Club Boulevard in 2024, and there are plans to build a hotel and apartment buildings in the area.
