A ruptured gas line has caused part of Leestown Road to close Wednesday afternoon.

The closure was reported by the Lexington Traffic Management Center around 1:15 p.m. Officials shut down all lanes of Leestown Road between New Circle Road and Greendale Road.

The exit ramps to Leestown Road from New Circle Road were also shut down, according to Lexington Emergency Management. The closure was expected to be in effect until approximately 6 p.m., but the road reopened around 4:15 p.m.

The closure could impact the Fayette County Public Schools bus schedule Wednesday afternoon. FCPS spokesperson Miranda Scully said there could be delays for bus riders from Meadowthorpe Elementary School, Leestown Middle School and Locust Trace.

The traffic management center said police are helping to facilitate the bus routes and parent pickup.

“Because of the undetermined ripple effect on traffic patterns, additional buses might be impacted this afternoon,” Scully said in a statement.

The area was already hampered with traffic congestion due to an ongoing construction project. Crews are converting the Leestown-New Circle Road interchange into a double-crossover diamond, an interchange with two signalized intersections where traffic crosses over to the left side of the roadway, then back to the right as it exits.

Construction is expected to be completed in summer 2027, according to the transportation cabinet.
