Rush hour crash sends 5 people to hospital, shuts down major Lexington road

A collision between an SUV and a motorcycle left two people with serious injuries and shut down inbound lanes of Athens Boonesboro Road in Lexington Friday afternoon.

Five people were taken to a local hospital after the crash.

In addition to the motorcyclist, who sustained life-threatening injuries, one person from the SUV sustained serious injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle using jaws, said Battalion Chief Derek Roberts of the Lexington Fire Department. He said three other people had minor injuries as a result of the collision.

The crash, reported just before 5 p.m., happened on Athens Boonesboro at the entrance to Jacobson Park, according to the Lexwrecks account on the social media platform X.

Inbound Athens Boonesboro was closed at Hays Boulevard.

The Lexington Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene.

Outbound lanes of Athens Boonesboro were open.

As of about 7:30 p.m., Lexington police Lt. Ilya Sharapov said inbound lanes of Richmond Road were expected to remain closed for a few more hours.
