Man in custody after hours long barricade situation in Lexington
A man surrendered himself to law enforcement after barricading himself inside a home for several hours in Lexington on Thursday.
The scene was on Darby Creek Road, between Man o’ War Boulevard and Palumbo Drive. U.S. Marshals attempted to arrest a suspect with a history of violence around 11 a.m., and the suspect barricaded themselves inside a residence, according to Jeremy Honaker, acting U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Kentucky.
U.S. Marshals were taking the case over from Kentucky Probation and Parole. WKYT reported the man surrendered to police just before 5:30 p.m. and was taken to a hospital.
SWAT and Kentucky State Police also assisted at the scene. Trooper Andy Stepp asked people to avoid the area while the situation was ongoing.
The arrest warrant was for a parole violation, Honaker said.
The man barricaded himself while Marshals attempted to serve the warrant, Honaker said.
Officers used pepper spray, non-lethal rounds and a personalized message from the man’s wife to try and force him out, but the tactics were unsuccessful.
Kentucky State Police’s SWAT team was called to the scene for additional help.
Also on the scene is KSP’s new tactical vehicle, Rook. Rook is a specialized, versatile armored vehicle that can assist with hostage situations, barricaded subjects, riot response and natural disaster scenarios.
Officers blocked off Darby Creek Road at Man o’ War Boulevard during the incident, but the area has since reopened.
