The Patchen Wilkes Farm on Winchester Road is set to get a new apartment complex in the near future.

The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Planning Commission approved a new apartment complex to be built on the horse farm, famous for the white horses it bred for decades, at 1811 Winchester Road.

The complex will feature 288 units across eight three-story buildings, as well as a clubhouse, pool and gym in the center of the property. There will be 488 parking spots and 56 garages for storage.

The development is the latest plan to be approved on former farmland, which is already home to some luxury housing.

A new 12,7000-square-foot Kroger store is under construction directly adjacent to the development. A mid-block crossing across the yet-to-be-built Charleston Drive extension will allow residents of the new apartments easy walking access to the Kroger.

Just east of the apartment complex will be a new subdivision of 42 single-family detached homes. There are no plans yet for the north side of the farm adjacent to Interstate 75.

Improvements to Winchester Road are expected to be made to allow residents access to Frederick Douglass High School.
