The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act declared Juneteenth a legal holiday in 2021 to commemorate the abolishment of slavery on June 19, 1865, over 160 years ago in the United States.

Kentucky is one of 33 states, plus Washington D.C., to recognize Juneteenth as a legal holiday since it was signed into law.

In years when Juneteenth falls on a weekend, the holiday is observed on the closest weekday: If Juneteenth is on a Saturday, the holiday is observed on Friday; if it falls on Sunday, the holiday is observed on Monday. This year, Juneteenth falls on Friday, June 19.

What is closed on Juneteenth? When is trash pick-up?

Government workers have federal holidays, often referred to as “bank holidays,” as paid days off, meaning banks and federal services will be closed.

  • Lexington’s recycling and trash collection will not operate on Friday, June 19. If your trash or recycling collection day is Friday, the makeup day will be Wednesday, June 17.
  • The U.S. Postal Service will be closed on June 19 and will resume regular main delivery and retail services on Saturday, June 20.
  • The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed in observance on Juneteenth. The stock market will open Monday at 9:30 a.m.
  • Kentucky’s Driver Licensing Regional Offices, the DMV, will be closed and reopen on Monday with normal business hours.

A delay of one business day should be expected for Federal Reserve services related to payroll, direct deposits and pending wire transfers.

The public is advised to expect a delay of one business day for closed operations. Regular USPS mail delivery and other services will resume on Saturday, June 20.

What is open?

Though banks are closed on the federal holiday, online banking, mobile bank apps and ATMs will be available.

FedEx and UPS will be open and making deliveries on a normal schedule. FedEx Freight will work on a modified schedule.

Large grocery and retail stores such as Publix, Target and Sam’s Club will all remain open.
