Central Kentucky towns move trick-or-treating to Friday

UPDATED Thursday at 7:45 a.m.: The city of Lexington on Thursday morning decided to move trick-or-treating to Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. because the weather forecast for Thursday evening had not improved.

In a statement, Mayor Jim Gray said: "We all enjoy the Halloween tradition and hate changing it, but the latest forecast has gotten worse with heavy rain and 40-50 mile per hour wind gusts, and that's just too risky for our kids safety. So we are adjusting Lexington's outdoor trick or treat to Friday night at 6-8p. The good news is, and this is important, for families who can't change their plans, there are several opportunities for indoor trick or treating tonight."

On Wednesday, many Central Kentucky communities had already moved trick-or-treat times to Friday because they were spooked by the reports of scary weather.

WKYT chief meteorologist Chris Bailey said this could be one of the wettest Halloweens on record in Lexington, with 1 to 2 inches of rain. The wettest Halloween was in 1942, when Lexington got 1.77 inches.

Bailey said showers are likely with possibly a thunderstorm after 4 p.m., bringing the potential for heavy rainfall and wind gusts of 40-50 mph. Temperatures will be in the 60s most of the day, he said.

Towns that have rescheduled trick-or-treating to Friday include:

■ Berea.

■ Danville.

■ Frankfort.

■ Georgetown.

■ Harrodsburg.

■ Jessamine County

■ Lancaster.

■ Lawrenceburg.

■ Paris, which will have trick-or-treating from 3 to 5 p.m. on Main Street and 6 to 8 p.m. in the rest of the city.

■ Richmond, which also has cancelled its Halloween Hoedown, which had been scheduled Thursday night.

■ Winchester, which is moving its Downtown Halloween Mania event to 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

■ Versailles.

Indoor trick-or-treat events:

■ Mall-o-Ween will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fayette Mall. About 80 stores are participating.

The event is open to children ages 12 and younger.

■ The Alltech National Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse Park will host free indoor trick-or-treating from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

■ Lyric Theatre Trunk or Treat, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Open to those 5 to 15 years old, and families. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Games, fun, food and prizes.
