Shaken Magoffin County students released from hospital after bus crash

More than 20 Magoffin County Public Schools students were shaken up but not seriously hurt when a car rear-ended their school bus early Monday morning in Salyersville.

Magoffin County Superintendent Stanley Holbrook said all of the students, and the school bus driver and monitor, had been released early Monday afternoon after being checked out at a local hospital. The driver of the car also was examined and released, he said.

The students complained of neck or back pain, but none of them suffered traumatic injuries, Holbrook said.

They ranged from age 5 five to high school seniors, the superintendent said.

Salyersville Fire Chief Paul Howard said the wreck happened about 7:15 a.m., when the bus stopped on West Maple Street to pick up a child. Howard said a car driven by Odell Pyle crashed into the rear of the halted school bus, which was carrying more than 40 children.

The car was a total loss, the fire chief said.

Holbrook, the superintendent, said six students went to the hospital by ambulance, and 15 or so were taken by their parents. Others later chose to go to the hospital after arriving at school, he said.
