The Winchester Police Department chased after an unusual suspect Saturday after receiving a call that a peacock was on the loose in the city.

Officers with the Winchester police were called Feb. 7 to French Avenue for a report of a peacock in the area, said Harvey Craycraft, assistant Winchester police chief.

“It was kind of an odd call,” Craycraft said Monday.

Craycraft said officers found the peacock hopping from one rooftop to the next. The Clark County Animal Shelter was called to assist, and officials reported Sunday the peacock was returned to its owner.

The shelter told WKYT that they get about five calls a year about loose peacocks, as they’re naturally curious animals.
