Driver having a medical emergency crashes through front of Lexington apartment building

A vehicle crashed through the front of an apartment building at 1929 Cambridge Drive Friday afternoon, sending the driver to the hospital and injuring a woman inside one apartment.

Lexington police Lt. Scott May said the driver of the SUV crashed because of a medical emergency.

Lexington Fire Department Major Matt Galati said a woman who was in the apartment with the most damage had a minor injury but declined to be taken to the hospital.

The crash was first reported at about 4 p.m. as a structure fire, because the dust from the crash was mistaken for smoke, Galati said.

“The first thing we were concerned with was making sure all the people were out of the building and out of the vehicle,” he said.

Though only two apartments were damaged in the crash, Galati said the residents of all 10 apartments in the building would likely be displaced, at least for the night, because of concerns about electrical safety.

He said the managers of the apartment complex were working to provide accommodations to the families.

Officials were also assessing the structural stability of the building Friday afternoon, he said.
