Bringing home a pup or kitty for the holidays? You might be able to get lower adoption fees
For cats and dogs without homes, getting adopted might be the best holiday gift they could hope for.
This weekend, a national nonprofit hopes to help as many animals as possible find a forever home by offering reduced adoption fees at more than 120 rescues and shelters in 25 states, including the Lexington Humane Society, according to a news release from the Bissell Pet Foundation.
During the Empty the Shelters Holiday Hope event Friday and Saturday, people can adopt animals for a reduced fee of $25 or less.
The Bissell Pet Foundation provides reimbursements to participating shelters for pets adopted during the event.
The shelters determine specifics, including hours for the event, parameters for how much the adoption fee will be and how the adoption process will work. Some shelters require pre-approval for adoption.
Aside from the Lexington Humane Society, other Kentucky organizations scheduled to participate include the Scott County Humane Society, Paris Animal Welfare Society, Lawrence County Humane Society, Warren County Humane Society, Kentucky Humane Society, Louisville Metro Animal Services and Humane Society of Henderson County, according to the Bissell Pet Foundation.
Adoptable pets are microchipped and spayed or neutered.
More than 27,000 animals have been adopted through Empty the Shelters events since the program began in 2016, according to the organization.
“To permanently end the homeless pet problem, everyone across the country needs to understand that there are beautiful, worthy animals in shelters who should be the first choice when bringing a pet into your home,” Cathy Bissell, founder of the organization, said in the release.
