Why Lexington police shut down Versailles Road during rush hour traffic on Friday

Traffic was shut down on Versailles Road during rush hour Friday afternoon while police investigated an incident in which a man apparently committed suicide on the side of the road.

Versailles Road was shut down in both directions between New Circle Road and Man o’ War Boulevard after a member of the man’s family called police just after 3 p.m. to report that he was suicidal and in a vehicle, said Lexington police Lt.. Ronald Keaton.

Keaton said the man, who was alone in the vehicle, had pulled over to the side of Versailles Road between Wellesley Heights Way and New Circle Road.

Keaton said the Fayette County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene after officers found him with “what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Two lanes of Versailles Road were reopened at about 5 p.m. Keaton said all lanes had reopened by 6:12 p.m.
