A major sewer line replacement near the University of Kentucky will mean more lane and intersection closures around the Lexington campus.

Avenue of Champions from South Limestone to Lexington Avenue will be restricted to one-way traffic beginning Monday, city officials said.

Avenue of Champions will be one-way westbound — toward South Limestone — beginning at Lexington Avenue. Meanwhile, the car and bike lane on the south side — closest to UK Gatton Student Center — will be fenced off and closed for sewer construction.

Traffic from Limestone will not be able to turn right onto Avenue of Champions. Maxwell Street is recommended as a detour.

The Limestone to Lexington Avenue sewer line replacement along Avenue of Champions will take months to complete, city officials cautioned. It is expected to be done in the fall.

Meanwhile, the intersection of South Upper and Winslow streets will be closed starting Friday, March 13, through the weekend. Starting at 7 a.m., a new manhole and 40 feet of pipe will be installed to connect to that manhole. The intersection is expected to reopen by 6 a.m. Monday, March 16.

But city officials caution that rain or other complications could cause delays. If that happens the South Upper and Winslow intersection will be closed at night during the week. To follow lane closures and updates, residents and UK students should visit www.LexingtonKY.gov/EuclidSewer.

The work on Avenue of Champions and Upper and Winslow streets is part of a two-year sewer line replacement project from Oliver Lewis Way to the intersection of Euclid and High Streets. Crews began replacing the more than two miles of sewer pipe a few weeks ago.

“While we realize that this is a lot of change at one time, it’s an unavoidable consequence in replacing an 80-year-old sewer line,” said Charles Martin, director of the city’s Division of Water Quality. “The cooperation and patience of everyone has been fantastic and is a big reason why we’re off to a fast start and trending slightly ahead of schedule.”
