Updated: Animal control pressing charges against owner of dead dog left by dumpster

Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control has decided to press charges against the owner of a dog that was left in a crate at a dumpster on Pimlico Parkway.

Cruelty Investigator Jai Hamilton said she has filed a charge of animal neglect against the owner. Animal control was previously awaiting results of a necropsy on the dog to determine its cause of death.

Based on the body condition, it looks like a neglect case,” Hamilton said Wednesday. “. . . If it is determined the animal suffered unnecessarily, then we will pursue charges.”

The dog was dumped behind the Meineke Car Care Center on Pimlico Parkway and was found early Tuesday, according to a Facebook post by the department. The post features surveillance camera video of the owner pulling the dog – in a crate – out of the back of a car and leaving the animal in a dumpster area.

Hamilton has spoken with the owner of the dog but declined to give details of the conversation.
