3-year-old dies from injuries after shooting himself in the head in Lexington home
A 3-year-old has died after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a house on Campbell Street last week, Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn said Monday.
Sir Zion Broyles died just after 1 p.m. Thursday. He shot himself in the head about 12 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 400 block of Campbell Street near 4th Street and Upper Street. He was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said after the shooting. He died at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center’s pediatric intensive care unit, Ginn said.
The Lexington Police Department has not concluded its investigation, according to Brenna Angel, a spokeswoman for the department. But the gunshot wound was accidental and self-inflicted, she said.
Broyles’ heart and kidneys were donated to another child on Saturday, according to GoFundMe page set up by the family for funeral expenses.
“Sir Zion Broyles was our light within the dark, our sweet within the sour, our Joy through out the day,” the family wrote on the fundraiser.
Zion’s father also posted a number of photos and videos of him on his Facebook page after his death.
“He was just such a happy and loved baby man ... I just want one more day to kiss” and hug him, said Sir Broyles.
