Lexington’s free meter parking ending May 18, revenue to be donated to charities

Parking meter fees will resume May 18 the Lexington Parking Authority announced Monday, but the parking authority will donate the meter revenue.

The parking authority decided to give drivers up to two hours of free parking at its meter spots in mid-March.

From May 18 to May 29, all meter revenues collected will be donated to God’s Pantry Food Bank and the Bluegrass Community Foundation’s COVID-19 response fund, according to an announcement from the parking authority.

“We are glad to help in some small way these wonderful organizations,” James H. Frazier, III, the parking authority board chair, said in a statement. “LPA has always exhibited a social conscience, a fact we are proud to continue.”

The parking authority suggested that customers concerned about touching meters should use the PayByPhone app.

The parking authority had also previously set up free 15-minute curbside pickup locations to help restaurants offering curbside pickup during the coronavirus pandemic. Those curbside spots will be maintained, the parking authority said in its announcement.

Meter rates range from $0.50 to $1.50 per hour.
