Popular Lexington June events canceled over COVID-19. What about July 4?
The city of Lexington has canceled many popular June events due to the coronavirus outbreak and bans on large group gatherings.
June events that have already been nixed include Big Band and Jazz, Summer Nights in Suburbia, Friday Flicks and the Southland Jamboree. Lexington city officials said they are deciding what to open on a month-by-month basis based on health experts recommendations and Gov. Andy Beshear’s executive orders.
Other sports and Lexington Parks and Recreation related activities that have also been canceled in June include football combines, all summer basketball leagues, tennis clinics and leagues and Camp Kearney.
No decision has been made yet on July 4 activities, said Susan Straub, a spokeswoman for the city.
The city has gradually reopened many park amenities after shutting down playing fields, playgrounds and courts in late March because too many people were not following social distancing guidelines.
