Kentucky cities take 7 of top 10 spots in U.S. for Census response. Where’s Lexington?
Kentucky was 13th in the United States for submitting Census answers, according to Census Bureau data from Saturday.
Kentucky was slightly above the national response rate, as just under 64 percent of Kentucky residents filled the Census out. The national response rate was 60 percent.
Ranked by response rate, Kentucky had seven of the top 10 cities in the nation. This competition favors smaller cities with easier routes to 100 percent, and most of the Kentucky cities were in Jefferson County. Broeck Pointe was ranked second with a response rate of just under 92 percent (Broeck Pointe had a population of 272 in the 2010 Census). Strathmoor Manor was third, Fox Chase was fifth, Lincolnshire was sixth, Strathmoor Village was seventh, Kingsely was eighth, and Norbourne Estates was 10.
North River, North Dakota (which had a population of 56 people in the 2010 census) was first with a response rate of 100 percent. Huntington Woods, Michigan, was fourth and Frontier, North Dakota, was tied for eighth.
In Kentucky, Fayette County had a self-response rate over 66 percent as of Saturday, which ranked 32 out of Kentucky’s 120 counties. Oldham County ranked first with a response rate of more than 79 percent. Jefferson County was 29 with a response rate just over 67 percent. The lowest response rate has been in Owsley County, as its rate was 19 percent.
Ranked by cities, Lexington was 156 in the state. Louisville was just a few spots ahead at 152. Broeck Pointe was first with a response rate of nearly 92 percent. Campton was last with a rate of just over 8 percent.
The southwestern region of Lexington had the highest response rates in the city. Some Census tracts had rates as high as 87 percent. Downtown Lexington had some of the lowest response rates, with a couple of tracts dipping below 42 percent.
Northern Kentucky had the highest response rate in the state, based on congressional districts. District 4 was just under 69 percent. Districts 2, 3 and 6 were all around 67 percent. District 1, in Western Kentucky, was just under 63 percent, and District 5 in Eastern Kentucky was just over 50 percent.
Less than 48 percent of Kentucky residents have responded online, which falls below the national average of about 48 percent. Lexington’s internet response rate was about 59 percent. Louisville’s was just over 67 percent. Online services aren’t available in all of Kentucky.
