Despite COVID-19, heat advisory causes Lexington to open cooling centers
Extreme weekend heat is causing Lexington to open cooling centers despite COVID-19 concerns.
Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s, with a heat index over 95 degrees, according to Lexington Emergency Management.
The cooling center at the Dunbar Community Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Rooms at the Picadome Golf Clubhouse will be open 7 a.m. to dark on Saturday and Sunday.
The Nathaniel Mission, Lexington Rescue Mission and Lighthouse Ministries will also be open on Saturday for cooling.
Emergency management urged people to wear a mask and maintain physical distancing. Everyone should be careful outside.
“Take extra precautions…if you work or spend time outside,” John Bobel, spokesman for Lexington Emergency Management, said in a statement. “When possible…reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.”
Lextran is offering free rides to the cooling centers, Lexington Emergency Management said. In addition, the Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention Weather Plan has been activated due to the extreme heat warning. It will remain in effect through the weekend.
Anyone who wants to report someone who may need a ride to shelter can call or text the Compassionate Caravan at 859-255-0301.
