The Lexington Police Department is asking the community to give input as it seeks reaccreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, also known as CALEA.

The department is asking Lexington residents to give feedback on officer interactions and policies, and give suggestions during a public phone-in session that’s part of the accreditation process. The department has been accredited through the commission for more than 25 years.

“In recent weeks, the public has had several opportunities to share their comments about Lexington police,” Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said. “We appreciate that feedback, and hope residents will also voice their thoughts with CALEA assessors as our department seeks reaccreditation.”

The phone-in session is on Monday, Aug. 3, from 3 to 5 p.m., according to the police department. Residents can call 859-797-9020 to speak with a CALEA representative or send comments by email at charleswalters10@outlook.com.

Written comments can also be sent by mail to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies at 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Va., 20155.

The department was first accredited by the commission in 1993 and is reevaluated every four years. In addition to public input, the department is evaluated for compliance with 450 national standards through written materials, interviews with personnel and other means, according to the department.
