Sewer line replacement project will impact busy Lexington intersection starting Monday

A sewer line replacement project in the Euclid Avenue and Avenue of Champions area will affect a busy intersection in the Chevy Chase neighborhood for the next month, Lexington city officials said this week.

Starting Monday, motorists will not be able to turn left from Euclid Avenue onto Tates Creek Road. Left-hand turns from Tates Creek onto Euclid will also be restricted.

The turn lane closures are expected to last a month, city officials said.

Drivers traveling toward downtown on Tates Creek may use Sunset Drive and South Ashland Avenue to reach businesses on Euclid.

To reach the University of Kentucky campus, city officials recommended drivers use Alumni Drive or Cooper Drive from Tates Creek or Woodland Avenue from East High Street.

The sewer line replacement project has also impacted traffic on Euclid Avenue.

All of Euclid is open to two-way traffic but the southside lane is closed from Marquis Avenue to East High Street. Sidewalks are open on both sides of the street.

The lane closures are necessary for crews to replace a more than 80-year-old sewer line. Crews started on the complicated sewer line replacement in February. The two-mile section to be replaced stretches from Oliver Lewis Way, through the UK campus, down Euclid to the intersection of Euclid and Tates Creek Road.

“We know that this will be difficult for local businesses for a few weeks,” said Charles Martin, director of the Division of Water Quality. “We are getting the word out that businesses will remain accessible during lane closures, and hope that construction will move quickly as it has during the rest of the project.”
