Updated: 7 hurt, 1 critical after shooting at Lexington community center, police say
Seven people were injured — one critically — in a shooting Sunday night at the Dunbar Community Center in Lexington, police said Monday.
The shooting happened after 9 p.m., Lt. Jeremy Tuttle said. An ambulance took one victim to the hospital. Six others showed up later at hospitals after being transported by private vehicles, Tuttle said. Officers found the victim on scene when police responded to the community center on North Upper Street for a shots fired call.
Several people had gathered at the community center for a cookout, police said in a Monday afternoon press release. The shooting occurred near the basketball court, and it appears multiple people fired shots.
Police identified the victims as six men, ages 18, 19, 21, 29, 34 and 40. A 21-year-old woman was also injured, according to police.
Police were investigating to determine how the shooting unfolded, Tuttle said. The initial investigation indicated that one group of people was on the basketball courts at the Dunbar Community Center when another group of people either walked up or drove by and began shooting, Tuttle said.
Lexington has had a surge of shootings in recent weeks, some of which have involved teenagers. Five teens have died in homicides this month.
Police are asking anyone with information connected to the Dunbar Community Center shooting to call 859-258-3600.
